#9: Follow Your Heart

Director, Greg Hackett

In this conversation, we talk to Greg Hackett. Founder and director of the UK production company, Spindle. We discuss his obsession with storytelling, why it’s important for directors to be vulnerable and the internal battles of running your own production company.

With a background in documentary, Greg is best known for fusing cinematic visuals and authentic performances, often with a technical execution. He has been awarded at British Arrows, Cannes Lions, Ciclope, UKMVAs, Kinsale Sharks, 1.4, YDA, Clios and more.

This was…emotional! Here are some sound bites from our chat with Greg.

“The process is where you grow. The process is where you make friends. The process is where you make art. And I often think, you can go hunting for all that external stuff - the validation. But actually, for the me, the validation comes from the process and the making”

“If I ever feel down or if I ever feel like I’m not heading to the right place, it’s usually because I haven’t made something that I believe in for that little bit too long. What I recognise in young directors, that I had then, that I need to keep tapping into now, is a healthy dose of naivety”
