#5: The Long Game

Director & Photographer, Libby Burke Wilde

In this conversation we speak to director and photographer Libby Burke Wilde. We discuss her fears of becoming a mother, being pigeon-holed as a director and pursuing a career in narrative film making.

Based in London, but originally from Lancashire, director Libby Burke Wilde's work mixes music videos and striking commercials with cinematic and emotionally-driven documentaries and scripted drama. Motivated by the power of storytelling to drive social change, her work immerses her audience in new worlds and subcultures, and is often focused on translating human stories into engaging portraits and narratives that shine light on socially complex topics.

Her short film ABSENT, created in partnership with the charity Freedom4girls to address stigmas around period poverty, won Gold at Kinsale for ‘Best Short Film Under 5 Minutes’, and went on to win two Silver Screen Awards at 2020's Young Directors Awards, alongside a string of other accolades.

This was such a treat! Here are some of our favourite soundbites.

“At the time when you think you’re going to ride this wave, and then I’m going to be out for a bit. It does feel daunting because…how do you get back in?”

“I was talking to other production companies and they just kind of assumed who I was and what I wanted to do. But I’d never actually been directly asked what I wanted to make”

“I measure success by making things that I think are important, that I think are going to make a change for good.”
